Cut-offs and pile-ups in shock acceleration spectra

چکیده
We have examined cutoffs and pile-ups due to various processes in the spectra of particles produced by shock acceleration, and found that, even in the absence of energy losses, the shape of the spectrum of accelerated particles at energies well below the nominal maximum energy depends strongly on the energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient. This has implications in many areas, for example, in fitting the observed cosmic ray spectrum with models based on power-law source spectra and rigidity dependent diffusive escape from the galaxy. With continuous energy losses, prominent pile-ups may arise, and these should be included when modelling synchrotron X-ray and inverse Compton gamma-ray spectra from a shock-accelerated electron population. We have developed a Monte Carlo/numerical technique to model the shape of the spectrum for the case of non-continuous energy losses such as inverse Compton scattering in the Klein-Nishina regime. We find that the shapes of the resulting cut-offs differ substantially from those arising from continuous processes, and we suggest that such differences could be observable through their effect on the spectrum of radiation emitted by a population of recently accelerated electrons as, for example, may exist in young supernova remnants. On “box” models of shock acceleration and electron synchrotron spectra
The recent detection of high energy γ-rays coming from supernova remnants and active galactic nuclei has revived interest in the diffusive shock acceleration of electrons. In the present paper we examine the basis of the so-called “box” model for particle acceleration and present a more physical version of it. Using this we determine simple criteria for the conditions under which “pile-ups” can...
متن کاملDiffusive shock acceleration in radiation dominated environments
Context. Radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations provide us with strong evidence of particle acceleration to multi-TeV energies in various astrophysical sources. Diffusive shock acceleration is one of the most successful models explaining the presence of such high-energy particles. Aims. We discuss the impact of inverse Compton losses on the shock acceleration of electrons that takes place in ...
متن کاملParticle Acceleration at High-γ Shock Waves
First-order Fermi acceleration processes at ultrarelativistic (γ ∼ 5-30) shocks are studied with the method of Monte Carlo simulations. The accelerated particle spectra are obtained by integrating the exact particle trajectories in a turbulent magnetic field near the shock. The magnetic field model assumes finite-amplitude perturbations within a wide wavevector range and with a predefined wave ...
متن کاملRadiative losses and cut-offs of energetic particles at relativistic shocks
We investigate the acceleration and simultaneous radiative losses of electrons in the vicinity of relativistic shocks. Particles undergo pitch angle diffusion, gaining energy as they cross the shock by the Fermi mechanism and also emitting synchrotron radiation in the ambient magnetic field. A semi-analytic approach is developed which allows us to consider the behaviour of the shape of the spec...
متن کاملThe Electron Energy Distribution in the Hotspots of Cygnus A : Filling the Gap with the Spitzer Space
Here we present Spitzer Space Telescope imaging of Cyg A with the Infrared Array Camera at 4.5 μm and 8.0 μm, resulting in the detection of the high-energy tails or cut-offs in the synchrotron spectra for all four hotspots of this archetype radio galaxy. When combined with the other data collected (and re-analyzed) from the literature, our observations allow for detailed modeling of the broad-b...
